Dorotea Displaces Bjurholm as Sweden’s Smallest Municipality

Bjurholm Loses Its Crown After 40 Years

In a sudden twist of events, Dorotea municipality is now the municipality in Sweden with the least number of inhabitants, according to the latest statistics from the Central Bureau of Statistics (SCB).

A Close Call

Currently, Dorotea municipality houses 2,377 residents. That’s one person less than Bjurholm, the municipality that’s a two-hour drive from Dorotea and has held the title of Sweden’s smallest municipality for the past 40 years. Bjurholm even marketed itself as Sweden’s smallest municipality, and now its flags will have to be remade.

A Slogan No More

"We’ve used it as our slogan, it’s been a way to put us on the map. Even though it now only differs by one inhabitant, it’s a title we can no longer carry," says Jimmy Johansson, Municipal Chief of Bjurholm.

The Reason Behind The Shift

The reason Dorotea is now Sweden’s smallest municipality in terms of population is because the younger generation is moving away from Dorotea and few choose to move to the municipality.

Well, it seems like Dorotea just won the game of thrones for the smallest municipality in Sweden. Bjurholm, you had a good run. Now, it’s time for a new flag, maybe with a smaller font?
