Investigation: Arlanda Express Train Derailment & Swedish Accident Investigation Authority Insights

Train Derailment Investigation by the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority

In late May, the Arlanda Express train derailed while traveling from Stockholm to Arlanda at a speed of 150 km/h, just below the permitted 160 km/h. Two people were slightly injured. Now, the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority has provided insights into what happened.

What Went Wrong?

According to Mikael Hillbo, the investigator at the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority, the derailment likely occurred at a switch leading into the maintenance workshop in Blackvreten. The movable crossing point came out of its position, causing the train to derail. Investigations are currently underway to determine why this happened.

Immediate Actions

Upon discovering the incident, the Transport Agency was immediately informed. They in turn told the Traffic Administration to check all similar switches on the route. No faults were found in this inspection.

Past Warning

According to the industry organisation "Järnvägar", this particular switch had received a remark during a routine check. However, the remark pertained to a different part of the switch, which was rectified before the accident.

And now, for a little derailment humor: Why don’t trains ever go to the gym? Because they always have a "track" record of getting "derailed"!
