No Longer Possible to Connect Lights to TV
Philips is no longer the Philips we know, with its TV business sold to TP Vision and its lamps to Signify. This means that these are different companies that don’t necessarily have to play nice with each other. Philips TV sets have long featured Ambilight, a light strip behind the TV that illuminates the wall in colors matching what’s displayed on the screen. This could be connected to Hue lamps, making them glow in the same colors and enhancing the viewing experience.
A Missing Feature in 2023 Models
However, the 2023 models from Philips, or rather TP Vision, no longer support this feature. The function, known as Ambilight+hue, is simply gone. While it’s likely that not a majority of buyers actually use this function, it’s still a shame.
The Need for a HDMI Sync Box
If you want to sync your TV with your lamps now, you’ll need to purchase a HDMI Sync Box, which is both expensive and complicated.
In a world where everything is getting smarter, it seems our TVs are having a bit of a dim moment. But who knows, maybe they’re just not morning people.
