Swedish Train Delays: A Comedy of Errors
Yesterday, out of the 3101 trains scheduled to depart, a whopping 1058 were cancelled and 203 were delayed. It’s a bit much, and you can see the minute-by-minute delay updates for this month on försenad.se. Spoiler alert: it’s way too many.
The Blame Game
If you’re a fan of depressing statistics, you can dive deeper on statistik.tågexperterna.nu. Here, you’ll find that SL is a major culprit for cancelled trains (472), but they only had 8 delayed. Arlanda Express, running on a single track, had 166 cancellations and 44 delays out of 283. SJ had 78 cancellations and 39 delays out of 360. We can forgive Arlanda Express for having poor numbers due to a broken track, but SJ’s high numbers? Not so pretty.
The Art Conclusion
In conclusion, if you’re planning on taking the train in Sweden, you might want to pack a book… or three. With over a third of trains being cancelled or delayed, it’s clear that the Swedish rail system is more reliable for providing comedic material than actual transportation.
