NASA’s Latest Stunt: Transporting a Mock Asteroid Sample
In a move that’s sure to have the entire universe on the edge of its seat, NASA is preparing for the return of OSIRIS-REx by transporting a mock asteroid sample. Yes, you read that right. A mock asteroid sample. Because apparently, real asteroids are just too mainstream for NASA.
The OSIRIS-REx Mission
For those of you who’ve been living under a rock (or an asteroid, if you will), the OSIRIS-REx mission is NASA’s attempt to bring back a piece of the asteroid Bennu. The spacecraft has been hanging out with Bennu since 2018, presumably exchanging asteroid jokes and discussing the latest in space fashion.
The Mock Asteroid Sample
Now, as OSIRIS-REx prepares to bid adieu to Bennu and return to Earth, NASA is practicing the sample return process with a mock asteroid sample. Because nothing says “we’re serious about space” like playing pretend with rocks.
“We’re using a mock asteroid sample to ensure that we’re fully prepared for when the real deal arrives,” said a NASA spokesperson, presumably with a straight face.
The Transport Process
The transport process involves a lot of complex scientific terms like “capsule”, “recovery”, and “transport”. But let’s simplify it: NASA is basically playing a high-stakes game of ‘Pass the Parcel’, with the parcel being a mock asteroid sample.
The Return of OSIRIS-REx
OSIRIS-REx is set to return to Earth in 2023, hopefully with a piece of Bennu in tow. Until then, we’ll just have to content ourselves with NASA’s riveting tales of mock asteroid sample transportation.
“Yo, it’s NASA, we’re back with a track,
Transporting mock rocks, ain’t no time to slack.
OSIRIS-REx on the return, Bennu in the rearview,
We’re making space moves, what you gonna do?”
